Wer heutzutage den heiligen Bund der Ehe eingehen will, der kommt um Eines nicht herum: den Gang zum Standesamt. Denn die kirchliche Verbindung ist heutzutage nicht mehr zwingend notwendig, die standesamtliche Trauung ist aber per Gesetz vorgeschrieben. Aus diesem Grund nimmt das Standesamt heutzutage auch eine wichtige Stellung im Staat ein.
Die Verbindung vor dem Gesetz
Die Aufgaben der Standesämter betreffen alle verwaltungsrechtlichen Akte, die den Stand, sprich: den zivilrechtlichen Status, des einzelnen Bürgers betreffen. Dazu gehört natürlich besonders jeder Vorgang, der den ehelichen Status des Bürgers betrifft, sowie alles, was mit diesem zusammenhängt. Im Besonderen sind das natürlich Eheschließungen, sowie -auflösungen. Auch die „eingetragenen Lebenspartnerschaften“, die es seit einigen Jahren gibt, werden im Standesamt aufgenommen. Zusätzlich werden sämtliche Nachweise, auch die Urkunden, im jeweils zuständigen Standesamt aufbewahrt. Natürlich werden auch sämtliche Vorgänge, die diese Standesurkunden betreffen, hier erledigt. Die wichtigsten Vorgänge, die auch am meisten vorkommen, sind Eheschließungen und -annullierungen, sowie Geburten und Todesfälle. Diese Vorgänge sind von dermaßener Wichtigkeit, dass sie ausschließlich amtlich durchgeführt werden dürfen. Aus diesem Grunde sind die Beamten des Standesamtes auch dazu verpflichtet, Urkunden mit besonderer Gründlichkeit und Sorgfalt auszustellen. Diese Sorgfaltspflicht gilt sowohl für Geburts-, Ehe-, als auch Sterbeurkunden. Weil diese Vorgänge von besonderer Wichtigkeit sind, werden dafür auch extra Urkunden erstellt, die diese dokumentieren. Zudem werden die Urkunden im jeweils zuständige Standesamt aufbewahrt, um sie für die Zukunt festhalten zu können. Aus diesem Grunde führt jedes Standesamt ein Archiv, in dem Urkunden nach Alter und Namen archiviert werden.

Geburtsurkunden
Die Geburtsurkunden werden nicht nur erstellt und archiviert, mit ihrer Hilfe wird auch das sogenannte Geburtenregister geführt. Dieses ist für jede Gemeinde zu führen, und dokumentiert die Geburten, und damit das Wachstum, der jeweiligen Gemeinde. Im Falle einer Eheschließung stellt das Standesamt zusätzlich den angemessenen feierlichen Rahmen der zivilen Eheschließung. Die Standesbeamten richten einen – meist speziell dafür gebauten – Raum her, und sorgen dafür, dass die Ehe im angemessen feierlichen Rahmen geschlossen werden kann.
Neben der rein dokumentarischen Tätigkeit sind viele Standesämter auch beratend zur Stelle. Besonders die organisatorischen Fragen im Todesfall, oder bei der Eheschließung sind es, bei denen die Standesbeamten oftmals zur Seite stehen.
